Basics of Health Education and Community Pharmacy

Health education in India besides spreading the information about prevention occurrence of a disease promotes health behaviour through, immunization, sanitation, and nutritional services. Yet not a single word seems adequate to describe it fully because of its amazing versatility. Human health is influenced by a number of factors including the environment. In modern times, medicines have formed a part and parcel of health and this has brought a pharmacist to play a prospective role in health education at the community level.
Earlier health education was taught along with Human Anatomy and Physiology in various pharmacy colleges, but with the introduction of “Health Education and Community Pharmacy” as a separate subject in ER-91, it was worthwhile to have a comprehensive book on the subject. Some of the universities have recently introduced this subject at the B.Pharm. level. Accepting of the need of the day we feel that the undergraduates in pharmacy and related sciences should also receive sound instruction in community pharmacy as early as possible. The reason for this is the significant position of a pharmacist in the healthcare team.

The contents of this book have been designed primarily as a text for students of pharmacy and allied professions, discussing the general principles, presenting the material in a historical perspective and thereby indicating briefly the nature of the evidence underlying each major conclusion. We have included the concept of health and disease, how food and environment influence it, the importance of microbiology in the spread of communicable diseases and the risk factors associated with non-communicable diseases. We have also made an attempt to familiarize the student with epidemiological studies, first aid treatment and the role of a pharmacist in family planning.
