Description
One of the objectives of the pharmaceutical sciences is the discovery and development of novel therapeutic agents for which pharmaceutical chemistry is the key subject in the pharmacy curriculum. Organic chemistry gives the basic foundation of pharmaceutical chemistry and hence, in pharmacy curriculum it is being taught at the first year itself. Implementation of the theoretical knowledge during and after the graduation is possible if students have hands on practice of the theoretical knowledge. There has been a need for a practical book in organic and medicinal chemistry for a long time and the books available for the B.Sc. students or the notes prepared by Pharmaceutical teachers have been used in different colleges. However, lucid and precise book for the same was not available and at times students used to face problems during the practicals. Similar kinds of practicals are also a part of B.Sc. and M.Sc. (Chemistry) curriculum. The present book is an attempt to combine practicals of organic, medicinal and synthetic chemistry such that a student will find not only an ease to conduct the practicals but also understand the principle of different reactions during the practicals.
This book provides a systematic stepwise method for identification of organic compounds. It describes the tests along with their principles and reactions. Preliminary tests have been included to give general idea about the organic compounds. Apart from this, the specific tests of each functional group with their principles and reactions have also been given. This will not only help the students to face the viva voce during practical examination but also in developing basic knowledge of practicals. The last chapter of the book provides a detailed stepwise method starting from the preliminary test up to the confirmatory tests for the functional group and their derivatization. It also includes the physical constants of nearly 175 compounds with their structures. The general instructions which should be followed in the laboratory to avoid any hazards and accidents are given in this book.
In pharmaceutical industries, various organic and medicinal compounds are utilised in different synthetic reactions for the development of novel drug molecules. Thus, basic knowledge about the reactions of the organic compounds is needed. So we have included a chapter which gives procedure for the synthesis of thirty (30) compounds along with their principles and chemical reactions. Having acquired the basics of synthetic reactions, the students can apply the same knowledge for discovery and development of novel drug molecules in future. We have also included the methods for preparation of various important reagents used in the different tests.
